Newspaper editor Will Shafer is sent to the small town of Long Creek to cover the kidnapping of a wealthy resident's young son. Will's friend Fran Spicer had been assigned the story but a car accident in Long Creek put… him in the hospital. Though the boy is soon found with a hermit, Will is troubled by inconsistencies in the case and by the close-mouthed police force, and he takes a closer look at Fran's "accident."
