Esteban: The African Slave Who Explored America
Par Dennis Herrick. 2018
When Pueblo Indians say, &“The first white man our people saw was a black man,&” they are referring to Esteban,…
who came to New Mexico in 1539. After centuries of negative portrayals, this book highlights Esteban&’s importance in America&’s early history.Books about the history of the American West have ignored Esteban or belittled his importance, often using his slave nickname, Estebanico. What little we know about Esteban comes from Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and other Spanish chroniclers, whose condescension toward the African slave has carried over into most history books. In this work Herrick dispels the myths and outright lies about Esteban. His biography emphasizes Esteban rather than the Spaniards whose exploits are often exaggerated and jingoistic in the sixteenth-century chronicles. He gives Esteban full credit for his courage and his skill as a linguist and cultural intermediary who was trusted and respected by Indians from many tribes across the continent.
A Bloody and Barbarous God: The Metaphysics of Cormac McCarthy
Par Petra Mundik. 2016
A Bloody and Barbarous God investigates the relationship between gnosticism, a system of thought that argues that the cosmos is…
evil and that the human spirit must strive for liberation from manifest existence, and the perennial philosophy, a study of the highest common factor in all esoteric religions, and how these traditions have influenced the later novels of Cormac McCarthy, namely, Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, Cities of the Plain, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. Mundik argues that McCarthy continually strives to evolve an explanatory theodicy throughout his work, and that his novels are, to a lesser or greater extent, concerned with the meaning of human existence in relation to the presence of evil and the nature of the divine.

clever, funny way to introduce new words into the vocabulary. . . . There's one word for every letter of the alphabet--wait until you see what they do with dogmatic, juxtapose and zealot.--The Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colorado) Each of these twenty-six short stories takes an elaborate, circuitous path that leads to a 'weighty' one-word punch line. . . . It's a creative and humorous approach to vocabulary building, and a natural lead in to having students create their own tall tales with multisyllabic conclusions.--School Library Journal
Losers and Keepers in Argentina: A Work of Fiction (Jewish Latin America Series)
Par Nina Barragan. 2001
Rifke Schulman, a Russian Jew, came to Argentina in 1889 at the age of eighteen and helped set up the…
small agricultural colony called Moises Ville. Rifke's journal and the accompanying short stories introduce Bela Pelatnik, a victim of the white slave trade; Henoch Rosenvitch, the love of Rifke's life; Leah Uberman on her way to attend Moises Ville's centennial celebration; and many others. The book spans the last hundred years and examines the experience of Jewish immigrants in both North and South America, some of whom were nourished by their roots, others who severed their ties to an old way of life. In looking at the choices they all made, the ways they found love or shut themselves off from it, Nina Barragan offers a moving and multidimensional portrait of early twentieth-century Argentina and its contemporary descendants.

The Ultimate Protest: Malcolm W. Browne, Thich Quang Duc, and the News Photograph That Stunned the World
Par Ray E. Boomhower. 2024
The Ultimate Protest: Malcolm W. Browne, Thich Quang Duc, and the News Photograph That Stunned the World examines how the…
most unlikely of war correspondents, Malcolm W. Browne, became the only Western reporter to capture Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc's horrific self-immolation on June 11, 1963. Quang Duc made his ultimate sacrifice to protest the perceived anti-Buddhist policies of the Catholic-dominated administration of South Vietnam's president Ngo Dinh Diem.Biographer Ray E. Boomhower's The Ultimate Protest explores the background of the Buddhist crisis in South Vietnam in the spring of 1963 that led to Quang Duc's self-sacrifice as well as the worldwide reaction to Browne's photograph, how it affected American policy toward Diem's government, and the role the image played in the violent coup on November 1, 1963, that deposed Diem and led to his assassination. The book also delves into the dynamics involved in covering the Vietnam War in the early days of the American presence and the pressures placed on the journalists to stop raising doubts about how the war was going. Browne and his colleague David Halberstam shared the 1964 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for their work in Vietnam.
From the Galleons to the Highlands: Slave Trade Routes in the Spanish Americas (Diálogos Series)
Par Alex Borucki, David Eltis and David Wheat. 2020
The essays in this book demonstrate the importance of transatlantic and intra-American slave trafficking in the development of colonial Spanish…
America, highlighting the Spanish colonies&’ previously underestimated significance within the broader history of the slave trade. Spanish America received African captives not only directly via the transatlantic slave trade but also from slave markets in the Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, and Danish Americas, ultimately absorbing more enslaved Africans than any other imperial jurisdiction in the Americas except Brazil. The contributors focus on the histories of slave trafficking to, within, and across highly diverse regions of Spanish America throughout the entire colonial period, with themes ranging from the earliest known transatlantic slaving voyages during the sixteenth century to the evolution of antislavery efforts within the Spanish empire. Students and scholars will find the comprehensive study and analysis in From the Galleons to the Highlands invaluable in examining the study of the slave trade to colonial Spanish America.Understanding Latin America demands dialogue, deep exploration, and frank discussion of key topics. Founded by Lyman L. Johnson in 1992 and edited since 2013 by Kris Lane, the Diálogos Series focuses on innovative scholarship in Latin American history and related fields. The series, the most successful of its type, includes specialist works accessible to a wide readership and a variety of thematic titles, all ideally suited for classroom adoption by university and college teachers.

The Conquest of the Desert: Argentina's Indigenous Peoples and the Battle for History (Diálogos Series)
Par Carolyne R. Larson. 2020
For more than one hundred years, the Conquest of the Desert (1878–1885) has marked Argentina&’s historical passage between eras, standing…
at the gateway to the nation&’s &“Golden Age&” of progress, modernity, and—most contentiously—national whiteness and the &“invisibilization&” of Indigenous peoples. This traditional narrative has deeply influenced the ways in which many Argentines understand their nation&’s history, its laws and policies, and its cultural heritage. As such, the Conquest has shaped debates about the role of Indigenous peoples within Argentina in the past and present. The Conquest of the Desert brings together scholars from across disciplines to offer an interdisciplinary examination of the Conquest and its legacies. This collection explores issues of settler colonialism, Indigenous-state relations, genocide, borderlands, and Indigenous cultures and land rights through essays that reexamine one of Argentina&’s most important historical periods.
Simulating the Brain: A Four-Step Method Using Ordinary Differential Equations and Python (Brain Informatics and Health)
Par Daniele Caligiore, Samuele Carli. 2025
This book presents a new methodology to develop system-level brain models using ordinary differential equations (ODE), which are to be…
solved and analyzed through simple Python scripts. Computer simulations of this kind of models allow the study of healthy and damaged brain functions, the discovery of new neural pathways that may be crucial for the emergence of pathologies, and to simulate the effects of possible new therapies acting on brain actors which are difficult to investigate in traditional research. The methodology consists of four steps: (i) design the model architecture which represents the interactions between different brain areas; (ii) write the ODE system which are implied by the model; (iii) build a Python script that correctly solves the equations; (iv) optimize the free model parameters using genetic algorithms or other techniques to obtain one or more model instances that reproduce the target investigated behavior. This book is for all people who want to learn how to use Python and ODE to simulate brain functions regardless of their backgrounds. While rigorous mathematical proofs of many aspects of the arguments discussed are out of the scope of this work and are therefore omitted, the most important concepts necessary for the critical judgment and self-assessment of the practitioner’s work are exposed in a simplified, readily applicable form, with extensive references for the adventurous reader to explore. The book is a self-consistent textbook containing all pieces necessary to learn from scratch: from the essential mathematical and computing tools to the knowledge necessary to design, simulate, visualize, and interpret brain models. These skills are acquired through several hands-on examples explained step-by-step. One important and distinctive aspect of the book is that, beside the theory, it provides the necessary contexts and practical examples which are key to the correct application of the proposed methodology.
Metaversum: Die Verschmelzung von Realität und Virtualität im Next Generation Internet
Par Peter Hoffmann. 2025

International Perspectives on Language and Work: Analysing the Impact of Mutual Influences
Par Stéphanie Cassilde, Adeline Gilson. 2025
This volume expands the definitions of language and work in researching their mutual influences. It considers language as a working…
tool, a vector of occupational identity, and so on, and work as the needed daily interrelation tasks, communication constraints and so on. The volume covers various national contexts: India, France, Argentina, Morocco, Portugal, Palestine, Brazil, Singapore, and Canada. The diversity of countries and linguistic spaces presented here enriches the perspectives in terms of transferring the insights from one situation to another. The specific cases discuss, among others, how an occupation may be structured by language use; how language embeds occupations within certain social contexts; challenges of teaching in multilingual classrooms; and how language affects therapeutic discourse and communication between patients and doctors. The chapters provide detailed contexts and backgrounds so that readers can enjoy entering into each context and seeing similarities and differences with their own research field to incorporate the findings into their own research. This volume is intended for sociologists interested in professionalisation, industrial and occupational sociology, sociology of work, public health, and management research.
