Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate (Routledge Focus on Environment and Sustainability)
Par Silvia Anna Ainio, Susanna Gionfra. 2026
Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate offers a captivating glimpse into the human face of climate change.Despite extreme…
climate-related events witnessed globally, many struggle to connect such global phenomena to their own lives in a tangible way. As a result, there is still a strong disconnect between the general awareness of climate change and the sense of urgency that inspires action. This book fills a critical void in the field by sharing 11 real-life experiences across five continents of the world, featuring ordinary people facing and adapting to the consequences of climate change in its different forms. Through gripping accounts of a nomad having to relocate from the desert to the nearest city, an indigenous person fighting back for land rights, and a winemaker finding creative solutions to increasing heatwaves, among other stories, the book humanises the challenges of climate change. By weaving scientific data with personal stories, the chapters deliver a compelling call to move beyond mere acknowledgment of the problem towards transformative action that respects the balance of ecosystems, fosters sustainable practices, and redefines our relationship with nature. Overall, the book highlights the urgent need for global awareness on what ultimately represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, leaving readers inspired and empowered to create a more sustainable and resilient future. This accessible and impactful book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change and environmental sciences and communication, as well as community leaders and NGOs wanting to understand practical examples and insights of climate change phenomena. Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission.
Museums and Design Practices (Critical Perspectives on Museums and Digital Technology)
Par Vince Dziekan, Marco Mason. 2026
Museums and Design Practices explores the increasingly critical role that design is playing in museums by focusing on how human-centred…
design approaches are being embraced and incorporated into their work practices. This book advances “design-as-practice” as a way to acknowledge the technosocial dimension of the working culture of cultural organisations. It reveals how designing is a situated phenomenon that enables museums and galleries to respond in a digitally mature way to emerging contexts and challenges of digital transformation. The original thesis forwarded by the authors is reinforced by reflections shared by leading museum practitioners and designers on the complex and multifaceted nature of human-centred practices found in museums and the various ways they function within their organisational working cultures. The infusion of design into all levels of museum practice demonstrates the capacity to transform how museums approach visitor experience, inclusive collaboration, and knowledge sharing in order to build resilience in the face of change and respond to the ‘wicked problems’ confronting cultural organisations today.Museums and Design Practices is for students and researchers as well as museum practitioners – especially those keen to understand emerging relationships that are forming between digital technology, design and the cultural work of museums. It will also be of interest to researchers and students working in the fields of design, digital culture, and museum studies.
This book analyses the transformation in 16th- and 17th- century English economic life that overturned the traditional restraints of the…
medieval economy for the commercial ethos that governs the modern world, and the resulting imbalance which opened the way to the environmental breakdown of today. On the open fields and commons, the smallholders had worked closely with the land as given, with minimal intervention in natural processes. The 16th century introduced a fundamental difference of approach as the inducement of exceptional profits encouraged manipulative exploitation of the land. “Freedom of trade” from arbitrary restraints and impositions became the new economic ethos, officially established by the mid-17th-century revolution and reinforced by other changes such as the emergence of the nationstate. The “rise of science” was associated with the agriculturalist adoption of empirical method for “improvement”, and a new philosophy accorded humankind the right to degrade other species for its own ends. By focusing on the causes and effects of capitalism at its first appearance, this volume traces the environmental crisis back to the switch from an essentially universalist to a basically individualist world. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Early Modern England, Economic Studies, and Environmental Studies.
Translating and Receiving Korean Media: From Squid Game to Life on Mars (The Korean Wave in Translation)
Par Jonathan Evans, Kyung Hye Kim, Jinsil Choi. 2025
In recent years, Korean culture has been incredibly successful internationally, from the films of auteur directors like Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)…
to shows like Squid Game and K-pop music. At the same time, media from the UK has also been successful in South Korea, with popular shows such as Killing Eve and Life on Mars. Written by scholars working across translation, film and media studies, this volume examines the ways in which Korean media has been received and translated in the UK, as well as how British media has fared in South Korea. Case studies explore how Korean media is (re)packaged and categorised for a Western audience and how paratextual material (trailers, adverts, fan reactions) mediates films and shows for international audiences. The book also examines how the Korean remake of Life on Mars localises the British show, how Squid Game has been audio-described and how slower media models can suggest more sustainable forms of consumption and distribution. Demonstrating how interdisciplinary research can shed light on different aspects of global media culture, this volume will be essential reading for scholars and students working on the translation and international media circulation. It will especially appeal to readers interested in the interactions between British and Korean media. This work was supported by the Fund for International Collaboration and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number ES/W01081X/1].
Room Temperature Photon Detectors
Par Antoni Rogalski, Weida Hu, Piotr Martyniuk. 2025
Room Temperature Photon Detectors provides an overview of the performance of emerging new generation of room temperature photodetectors generally called…
low-dimensional solid (LDS) photodetectors among which the most important are two-dimensional (2D) materials, perovskites, and quantum dots (QDs)/nanowires (NWs) operating in a wide spectral range from the ultraviolet (UV), visible (VIS), far infrared (FIR) to terahertz (THz). The LDS reported performance at room temperature is even better than that presented for standard commercial photodetectors. This book describes the peculiarities of the physical properties of LDS materials and their impact on the photodetectors’ performance. It also undertakes a comprehensive analysis of these performances when confronted with the standard photodetectors dominating the global market.Currently, intensive efforts are being made to reduce the cost of imaging systems and, in particular in the infrared (IR) range, to increase their operating temperature by reducing size, weight and power consumption (SWaP). This raises the question of whether the emergence of a new generation of LDS photodetectors will result in their rapid commercialization and serious competition for the standardized bulk photodetectors. This book attempts to answer those issues/questions.Features• Defines the importance of LDS photodetectors in the broad group of standard UV, VIS, IR, and THz photodetectors, and includes their advantages/disadvantages• Covers different types of photodetectors, including the relevant aspects of theory, types of materials, their physical properties, and detector fabrication• Provides invaluable resource for graduate students in physics and engineering, as well as a guide for those already working with sensors and systems, thermal imaging, remote sensing, optical telecommunications, and light detection.
Toxic Masculinity on the London Stage, 1600–1610 (Routledge Focus on Literature)
Par Anthony Archdeacon. 2025
The idea of toxic masculinity might feel like a very modern, even twenty-first century notion, but similar concerns about male…
behaviour, also often characterised in terms of poisons and poisoning, can be identified in the literature of 400 hundred years ago, not only in Shakespeare’s Othello and The Winter’s Tale but also lesser-known plays that were popular on the London stage in the 1600s. Poison-related tropes, and the recurrent plot device of a man trying to poison a woman, expressed complex and sometimes contradictory attitudes towards socially unacceptable male behaviour. These plays depict the early modern male as both poisoned and poisoner – poisoned by inherited misogynistic ideas and attitudes, and poisoner of women, both literally and metaphorically. Seeing them as enacting problematic situations and raising difficult questions rather than simply offering the moral certitudes of Christianity or the prescriptions of contemporary conduct book, the book points to these plays as evidence of disquiet and anxieties to which we can still easily relate today. The fact that some plays responded to real-life events such as familicide is an indicator of this socially responsible role of the theatre, engaging its audience in current issues and controversies. The use of the poison theme in relation to male violence and misogyny shows that the early modern theatre was raising awareness of the same problems that are identified as toxic masculinity today.

applied and independent voice lessons. Knitting together research from cognitive science, education, mindfulness, and sports psychology, the book promotes a student-centered approach to teaching that gives singers agency over their vocal expression and buoys teacher well-being.Divided into two parts, the book begins by examining the student–teacher relationship. The second part focuses on fostering a singer’s artistry, covering such topics as selecting repertoire with the student, examining motor skill learning and various practice modalities, cultivating vibrant performances through artistic research, and creating an equitable rubric for assessment. Throughout the book, research is supported by anecdotes and insights from a diverse roster of Western classical, musical theatre, and CCM voice teachers.Synthesized with reflective questions, recommendations for further reading, and a robust online companion, Wholehearted Voice Pedagogy presents an integrative approach to instruction that empowers singing artists and engenders connected, gratifying teaching.
