Sean O'Casey is one of Ireland's best-known writers. He is the most frequently performed playwright in the history of the…
Irish National Theatre, and his work is often revived onstage elsewhere. O'Casey is also widely studied in schools, colleges, and universities in the English-speaking world. This book offers a new contextualisation of this famous writer's work, revisiting his association with Irish nationalism, historical revisionism, and celebrated contemporaries such as W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. The volume also brings O'Casey's work into contact with topics including disability studies, gender and sexuality, post-colonialism, ecocriticism, and race. Sean O'Casey in Context explores a number of existing ideas about O'Casey in the light of new academic developments, and updates our understanding of this important writer by taking into account recent scholarly thinking and a range of theatrical productions from around the globe.Par Sarah Bull. 2025
Bringing together perspectives from the histories of medicine, sexuality, and the book, Sarah Bull presents the first study of how…
medical publications on sexual matters were made, promoted, and sold in Victorian Britain. Drawing on pamphlets, manuals, textbooks, periodicals, and more, this innovative book illustrates the free and unruly circulation of sexual information through a rapidly expanding publishing industry. Bull demonstrates how the ease with which print could be copied and claimed, recast and repurposed, presented persistent challenges to those seeking to position themselves as authorities over sexual knowledge at this pivotal moment. Medical publishers, practitioners, and activists embraced allegations of obscenity and censorship to promote ideas, contest authority, and consolidate emergent collective identities. Layer by layer, their actions helped create and sustain one of the most potent myths ever made about the Victorians: their sexual ignorance. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.Par Benjamin Grant Purzycki. 2025
The relationship between religion and morality has been a steadfast topic of inquiry since the dawn of the social sciences.…
This Element probes how the social sciences have addressed this relationship by detailing how theory and method have evolved over the past few generations. Sections 1 and 2 examine the historical roots of cross-cultural inquiry and Section 3 addresses the empirical tools developed to address cross-cultural patterns statistically. Sections 4-6 address how the contemporary evolutionary social sciences have been addressing the role religious cognition, behaviour, and beliefs play on moral conduct. By critically examining the tools and theories specifically developed to answer questions about the evolution of morality, society, and the gods, this Element shows that much of our current knowledge about this relationship has been significantly shaped by our cultural history as a field. It argues that the relationship between religion and morality is, despite considerable diversity in form, quite common around the world.Par Peter Zachar, Konrad Banicki. 2025

insight into the historical roots and current reasons for the hybrid natural and social scientific conceptual platform of psychiatry. The role of values in the development and recovery from mental illness are covered as well as progressive developments, outlining a novel research methodology. Demonstrating the importance of the integration of each main dimension of psychiatry (such as biological, psychological, social, and existential), the book includes values in theory and research in working out the epistemological foundations of psychiatry as an academic discipline and in clinical practice. Covering the major directions from which the subject of mental ill health has been approached (neurobiology, psychoanalysis and the psychotherapies), the common conditions and the controversies surrounding them are explored. Highly relevant to academics, clinicians and students in psychiatry, psychology, primary and social care.Par Christine Kim, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah. 2025
The International Tax Revolution offers the first comprehensive analysis of the profound changes in international taxation over the past decade,…
culminating in the landmark October 2021 agreement by over 140 countries to implement a global corporate minimum tax and modify profit allocation and nexus rules for the digital economy. The book provides a historical narrative of how the original International Tax Regime (ITR) crumbled under the pressures of globalization and tax competition between 1980 and 2008, and how the financial crisis of 2008-2010 and subsequent cuts to social welfare programs spurred governments to adopt new approaches to taxing multinational corporations. Chapters explore the impact of globalization and tax competition on countries' ability to provide a social safety net for their citizens, and outline how the world has come together to limit such competition, modify the outdated rules, and promote greater equity in the global tax system.Par Jordan Wessling, Ross Parker. 2025
Theists maintain that God created the world and acts within it. However, opinions divide regarding the motives that rest behind…
and systematically structure God's actions ad extra, especially those actions pertaining to humanity. The major paradigms differ as to whether God is principally motivated (i) by the goal of glorifying Himself, or (ii) by the demands of His own holiness, or (iii) in perfect conformity to moral norms, or (iv) by perfect love. The challenge of providing a theoretical framework for understanding God's fundamental motives vis-à-vis creation constitutes the problem of divine motivation. This Element addresses this problem from a Christian perspective. It assesses leading divine motivational frameworks concerning God's engagement with humanity, and it defends one framework in particular: the Agapist Framework. According to this preferred framework, God's actions toward humans are fundamentally motivated by God's perfect love.Par Marie-Josée Fortin, Mark R. Dale. 2005
Designed for researchers in ecology at all levels and career stages, from students and postdoctoral fellows to seasoned professionals, this…
third edition reflects the significant advances in quantitative analysis of the past decade. It provides updated examples and methods, with reduced emphasis on older techniques that have seen limited use in recent ecological literature. The authors cover new and emerging approaches, including Hierarchical Bayesian analysis and spatio-temporal methods. A key feature is the integration of ecological and statistical concepts, highlighting the critical role that this type of analysis plays in ecological understanding. The book provides up-to-date summaries of methodological advancements in spatial and spatio-temporal analysis, along with insights into future developments in areas such as spatial graphs, multi-level networks, and machine learning applications. It also offers practical examples and guidance to help researchers select, apply, and interpret the appropriate methods. This Element tells the twenty-year socio-legal story of human rights-based climate change litigation. Based on an original database of the…
totality of rights-based climate change (RCC) lawsuits around the world as well as interviews with leading actors and participant observation in the field, the Element explains the rise and global diffusion of RCC litigation. It combines insights from global governance, international law, climate policy, human rights, and legal mobilization theory in order to offer a socio-legal account of the actors, strategies, and norms that have emerged at the intersection of human rights and climate governance. By proposing a broad understanding of the impacts of legal mobilization that includes direct and indirect, material and symbolic effects, it documents the contributions and shortcomings of human rights litigation in addressing the climate emergency. This book provides a concrete description of the identity connected components of the real and complex exceptional Lie groups. The…
constructions are elementary and improve on those of H. Freudenthal. The complex simple Lie algebras were classified into classical (An, Bn, Cn, Dn) and exceptional (G2, F4, E6, E7, E8) types at the end of the 19th century by W. Killing and É. Cartan. These simple Lie algebras and the corresponding compact simple Lie groups arise in many settings in mathematics and physics. The exceptional Lie groups form an especially interesting class of objects that have attracted the attention of numerous mathematicians. Requiring no prior knowledge of composition algebras or Jordan algebras, the book will be valuable to anyone who wants to learn about the structure and realizations of these fascinating groups.Par Mathias Bös, Johannes Becker, Sevil Çakır. 2025
This book demonstrates the analytical power of the concept of fragility as a central and defining aspect of global migration…
processes. To this end, the book brings together authors from the Americas, South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, fostering a global dialogue on the social structuring of migration fragility in and between the Global North and the Global South. The various chapters of the book focus on two aspects. First, it discusses the multiplicity of the migrant as a social figure. There is not just one type of migrant, but a multiplicity of different fragile configurations that lead to the migrantization of people. Secondly, the same applies to the process of migration itself. There is a plethora of different articulations of fragility in crossing borders and organizing a new life somewhere else. Both perspectives show that the fragility of migration is not an aberration from &“normality&”. Fragility is an intrinsic part of the stabilization of social inequalities of migration between different migrants and different countries and regions of the globe. As such, this book is an important resource for researchers and students interested in the study of migration processes. The four-volume set LNAI 15819–15822 constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in HCI,…

The Black Sea region has undergone significant political and social transformations over the past few decades, resulting in a new…
geopolitical reality that demands scholarly attention. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the evolving security dynamics and the associated narratives in this strategic area. With a particular focus on the interplay between European and regional perspectives, this volume explores the critical role of power, energy policy, and security interests in shaping the region's geopolitical landscape. It examines the resurgence of regional leading powers, notably Russia, which has pursued a militant and aggressive foreign policy to reclaim its dominant position. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has had a profound impact on the Black Sea region, leading to political and social crises in reform-oriented states like Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. Moreover, this book delves into Turkey's shifting role in the Black Sea region, as it reevaluates its strategic position between Asia and Europe. The authors analyze Turkey's transition from a cautious and dialogue-oriented regional policy to a more offensive and aggressive foreign policy profile. By considering diverse perspectives, the volume evaluates the prospects for an effective EU foreign policy in the region, examines the potential for sustainable democratic transformation, and explores the growing militarization of Turkish and Russian foreign policies. It also sheds light on the challenges and opportunities for strengthening pluralistic systems in the afflicted states. Featuring contributions from leading scholars in international security studies and foreign policy, this book offers a timely and in-depth exploration of the Black Sea region's complex dynamics. It will be an indispensable resource for scholars and policymakers seeking to understand the strategic disputes and their implications for European and regional interests.Par Philippe Palanque, Achim Ebert, Shah Rukh Humayoun, Gerrit van der Veer, Kris Luyten, Luciana Zaina, José Creissac Campos, Davide Spano, Vera Memmesheimer. 2025

idea of religious freedom? Where does it come from? Why should it be protected? These important questions for understanding religious freedom are usually addressed through secular and immanent foundations which are unable to sufficiently grapple with the religious nature of religious freedom – its connection with the divine. Deagon proposes an alternative approach rooted in Christian Natural Law. In Part I of the book, Deagon defines and develops Christian Natural Law, identifying three consistent themes: Love, the True and the Good. In Part II, Deagon deploys Christian Natural Law to articulate a theological framework for religious freedom which shows that religious freedom is an individual and social good, is oriented to the true and is grounded in love. In doing so, Deagon offers a new foundation for religious freedom which properly considers it as a matter of both human and divine action. This book will be of interest to those engaged in law and religion studies, in particular scholars of religious freedom, theology and jurisprudence and human rights.
