War and Diplomacy in Modern Japan: Prime Minister Kōki Hirota and His Times
Par Ryuji Hattori. 2025
This open access book examines the life and work of Koki Hirota, who served as Japan's foreign minister and prime…
minister from 1933 to 1938 - the period that saw the final Japanese diplomatic attempts at achieving a modus vivendi with China before the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It looks at the failed attempts to prevent that war from evolving into a protracted conflict. Hirota's actions and inactions during this time resulted in a death sentence at the Tokyo Trials following the end of the Second World War, making him the only civilian official to meet such a fate. Hirota is seen as a martyr-like figure in Japan, but this book counters this public image by showing how, despite initially championing a cooperative relationship with China as foreign and prime minister, he continually acquiesced to the military's demands before being swept away by the rise of populist politics that followed early Japanese success in the Second Sino-Japanese War. As the first biography of Hirota to be published in English, this book provides an in-depth account of Sino-Japanese relations and Japanese diplomacy during this critical period and examines the ultimate failure of the civilian government to check the adventurism of the Japanese army. It is relevant to historians of Japan, and to those interested in diplomatic history, and the Second World War - as well as scholars working in various areas of contemporary East Asian politics.

This open access book explores the history of how banks and banking services have become part of everyday life. Taking…
welfare state Sweden as its setting, the book identifies key cultural challenges and shows how banks and finance companies made inroads into the workplace, the family, spaces of consumption and the world of social movements while also taking on tasks typically associated with state authorities. Focusing on this ‘bankification of everyday life’ reveals the historical links between the post-war welfare state and the financialised everyday culture of the late twentieth century. This book will be of interest to scholars of economic and cultural history and sociology, as well as those interested in the history of welfare states and the development of commercial surveillance.

Aperiodic Resonances - Theory and Applications
Par Miguel A. Sanjuan, Jianhua Yang. 2025
This book presents various types of aperiodic resonances in the form of a complete theoretical framework for the first time.…
It makes aperiodic resonance be a new disciplinary direction. In addition to the achievements in existing papers, the book proposes some new methods and discovers some new phenomena about different aperiodic resonances in nonlinear systems. The book includes theoretical analysis methods and their applications in three typical engineering backgrounds. It links theoretical researches on physical phenomena with different engineering problems. It aims to solve engineering problems from a new perspective based on aperiodic resonance theories.
In the Meantime: Toward an Anthropology of the Possible
Par Adeline Masquelier, Deborah Durham. 2025
The “meantime” represents the gap between what is past and the unknown future. When considered as waiting, the meantime is…
defined as a period of suspension to be endured. By contrast, the contributors of this volume understand it as a space of “the possible” where calculation coexists with uncertainty, promises with disappointment, and imminence with deferral. Attending to the temporalities of emerging rather than settled facts, they put the stress on the temporal tactics, social commitments, material connections, dispositional orientations, and affective circuits that emerge in the meantime even in the most desperate times.
Chinese Medicine in East Africa: An Intimacy with Strangers (Epistemologies of Healing)
Par Elisabeth Hsu. 2025
Based on fieldwork conducted between 2001-2008 in urban East Africa, this book explores who the patients, practitioners and paraprofessionals doing…
Chinese medicine were in this early period of renewed China-Africa relations. Rather than taking recourse to the ‘placebo effect’, the author explains through the spatialities and materialities of the medical procedures provided why - apart from purchasing the Chinese antimalarial called Artemisinin - locals would try out their ‘alternatively modern’ formulas for treating a wide range of post-colonial disorders and seek their sexual enhancement medicines.

Communication of the new generation is upon us. It was not long ago that the idea of remote working or…
of machine learning seemed like futuristic endeavors. Yet now, the prospect of using various communication technologies to work for us has never been more feasible. We are navigating connected ecosystems and using data technologies and algorithms to keep pace with an ever-shifting business world. This volume focuses on the impact of communication in a changing world on society and business cultures. The issues that are raised by the authors of this volume range from exploring how language and technology interact in the workplace environment to considering the use of generative technologies and artificial intelligence in marketing and advertising. While the authors showcase a diversity of disciplinary and methodological approaches, they are united in their underlying belief that communication in a changing world is, by and large, a facilitator of dialogue, and is powered by interactions and expansive, cross-disciplinary conversations.

How Compassion Works: A Step-by-Step Guide to Cultivating Well-Being, Love, and Wisdom
Par John Makransky, Paul Condon. 2025
Uncover your innate capacity for love, presence, and wisdom with compassion training adapted from Tibetan Buddhism and contemporary psychology.Everything we care about—our mental and…
physical well-being, our relationships, our spiritual life, our ability to be useful to others—depends on our ability to access love and compassion within ourselves first. This clear, step-by-step guide offers a way to cultivate this power through an evidence-based meditation method called Sustainable Compassion Training (SCT). With practices drawn from Tibetan traditions, attachment theory, and cognitive science, How Compassion Works uses a progressive series of meditations to gradually build our capacity for mindfulness and presence—and to help us avoid empathic distress, compassion fatigue, or burnout. Organized into three categories—receptive mode, deepening mode, and inclusive mode—these practices help us cultivate unconditional care and discernment from within. With a flexible framework that allows practitioners to integrate their own religious or spiritual beliefs, this book offers practices suitable for people of all faiths and those seeking a purely secular path.
