Food is the physiological basis of man’s existence but is also an expression of a society’s culture and may play…
many roles other than physiological in terms of both personal and group relationships. Originally published in 1976, The Making of the Modern British Diet focusses on the role of food during industrialisation and urbanisation in Britain.Part One contains a series of commodity studies covering bread, cereals, biscuits, meat, milk, tea and cocoa which reflect trends in the supply of some of the foods in the British diet during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The emphasis in Part Two is predominantly on consumption, either through the study of living standards or consumer preference or through the presentation of food and the organisation of its outlets to the consumer. Part Three provides a nutritional evaluation which is an entirely new approach in an historical work.Par Sue Schofield. 1979
Originally published in 1979, Development and the Problems of Village Nutrition was concerned with the development of micro-level approaches (and…
one in particular) to nutrition problem identification. The author believed that malnourishment could only really be examined, analysed and understood at the micro level where the whole range of factors affecting nutrition are displayed, and individual, community and regional problems could be diagnosed to provide the basis for more meaningful action and plans. The village-oriented approach to micro-level nutrition problems was initiated as a new approach to the study of development problems by the Village Studies Programme (VSP) at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in 1969. The research on which this book is based was conducted as part of the programme. Today it can be read in its historical context.Par Hugo Osvald. 1966
Originally published in 1966, the extremely urgent task confronting our generation – to produce food in sufficient quantity and of…
adequate quality for the world’s rapidly increasing population – may have appeared terrifyingly great and very difficult to solve. In fact, some regarded it as impossible, visualising a world in which the population would increase quicker even than scientific man could feed it and seeing a solution only in wholesale birth control. To these Hugo Osvald, a Scandinavian nutrition expert, did not belong. He surveys all the means, scientific and agricultural at our disposal at the time and reveals that, by their rapid development, enough food can be produced for a world population several times larger than at present. There are practically no limits, he said, to the possibilities of producing food. We were utilizing only a small percentage of the earth’s capacity.Even the lands where starvation was prevalent have the same basic necessary conditions for a vast improvement: fertile soil, water and labour. Knowledge and guidance were already available and could be increased. Dams, irrigation systems, transport facilities and power supplies, fertilizer factories, plant breeding and protection, animal husbandry, technical education – all these could be provided and the possibilities of the oceans as a source of supply had scarcely been explored. The author considered all these factors and the problems involved, and brings a convincing answer to the pessimists. With food poverty still an issue today, this book can be read in its historical context.Par Olav Stokke, Edward Clay. 1991
Food aid continues to be a high profile, and perhaps the most controversial form of aid. Food Aid Reconsidered: Assessing…
the Impact on Third World Countries, originally published in 1991, which concentrates on recent experience, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, provided a stocktaking on the state of the debate and the contribution that economics and other social sciences had made to resolving many of the controversies surrounding food aid at the time. These issues include the gap between the potential and actual contribution of food aid on food security and agricultural production in developing countries, European dairy aid to India and possible alternatives to exporting food from developed countries for providing humanitarian assistance to hungry people. Today it can be read in its historical context. In Britain, class differences in children’s health remain wide, and it is often assumed that an important contributory factor is…
class differences in the attitudes and behaviours of mothers. Originally published in 1986, Keeping Children Healthy draws on an empirical study to throw light on mothers’ actual health care of their young children and to consider what differences, if any, there are between groups of mothers. The book is about how women care for their children’s health: what they think matters, what they actually do, and what affects their actions. Throughout, mothers’ perspectives are considered in the light of the social and material context of their family lives: their income, their housing, the neighbourhood, the network of friends and relatives, access to services, and the quality of services available. The author shows that mothers have a highly responsible approach to child health care, and high standards for good health in children, despite the fact that socially disadvantaged mothers have to contend with many constraints in caring for their children as they wish.A central aspect of the book is the question of whom mothers turn to for help, and what they consider to be the role of professionals in helping them in their child care work. Indeed, the book provides essential and illuminating reading for all those who have professional dealings with the parents of young children such as doctors, social workers, health visitors and teachers and the policy makers and administrators who plan and run health and day care services. Parents who work continuously to ensure their children’s health will find much to recognize and much to think about in this book.Par The London Food Commission. 1988
‘All natural: no artificial colours or flavours’. This was an increasingly familiar claim made for the food we bought in…
the late 1980s. But what about the other ingredients? Additives are only one form of adulteration. Nitrates, excess water, pesticide residues, too much fat, and the newest of them all food irradiation, are some of the others. The questions they pose for all of us are inescapable, as is the overall issue of poor-quality food dressed up to be what it is not.In this book, originally published in 1988, the London Food Commission, Britain’s independent food watchdog, spells out the dangers, and suggests solutions. It challenges official policy and condemns official secrecy. It says why British food is the sick food of Europe. It believes that what is needed is a major shake-up in Whitehall and the food trades, and calls for a new anti-adulteration alliance – a positive campaign for improved food policy. And it backs all arguments with rigorous and detailed evidence.Food matters to everyone. We deserve the best. We will only get it if we demand it. This book spelt out what our demands should be. Still a big topic of interest today this is an opportunity to look at some early issues surrounding the food we buy and assess how far we’ve come. This book presents digital placemaking as a new testing ground for urban democracy. It explores the participatory practices of digital…
placemaking and their implications on blurring formal and informal boundaries of decision-making and urban politics.Drawing on examples from Australia, China and Taiwan, the book examines how contemporary cities are witnessing an era when digitality becomes a mode of placemaking and participation becomes an urban condition. Such developments manifest as urban activism, creative branding, tech placemaking and digital governance that trigger changes in urban engagement and politics. This book views digital placemaking through an assemblage lens to demonstrate how it can be a relational site of contentions and collaborations among civil society, industries and governments without observance of strict boundaries. Contrary to an often binary and zero-sum reading of urban politics, this book advocates for a tripartite assemblage model of urban politics that is neither hierarchical nor deterministic. This book proposes an ouroboros model as a systematic approach that conceptually anchors digital placemaking studies to the nexus of urban institutions and digital technologies. It reconceptualises urban politics as a relational process of nuances, contingency and complexity in the flux of cosmopolitan power movements and inquiries. Ultimately, the book develops the notion of socio-technical natality to counter the myth of tech inevitability and instil a thesis of hope and change. This book will interest researchers, policymakers and professionals in urban studies, media studies, cultural studies, urban communication, creative placemaking, community engagement, urban advocacy and urban governance.Par Osamu Morita, Yuji Nakano. 2025
This book offers the theory of causal analysis and its applications. The authors have developed this book in relation to…
its applications to four climatological phenomena to prove the theory of causal analysis in time sequential data analysis.Local Causal Test and the Partial Causal Test are used to study the theory of causal analysis. These are then applied to understand the climate effects of the eruption at Mt. Pinatubo, the effect of the El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The reader learns about Test(S), a statistical test used to determine if the statistical properties of the data, such as mean and variance, remain constant over time within a local window. The authors also use the Stationary Test and Causality Test in time series to explore relationships within a localized subset of data as witnessed from the climate phenomenon. The book looks at the eruption at Mt. Pinatubo, ENSO, and NAO and applies causal theory to study the resultant air temperature at the 1000 hPa pressure level, geopotential height of 1000 hPa pressure surface, and surface precipitation. The program code of the causal analysis is offered for readers to be able to reconfirm the results and apply it to other time-sequential data. This book is useful for researchers and graduate students of applied mathematics, physics, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, engineering technology, and economics.Par Rekha Nair, Piyusha Somvanshi, Mahesh M Bundele. 2024

The need of the hour is a balanced approach to multi layered conservative methods. Any sustainable devel□opment has a multifaceted approach, encompassing environmental, tech□nological, social, and economical developmental dimensions. This book focuses on these various issues in a progressive manner. The selected papers in this book have highlighted a plethora of issues related to green technology and sustainable development. Ample care has been given to selecting the papers which tried to bridge the gap between technological advancement and its impact on the environment.Par Alexander Alberro. 2025
An exploration of innovative practices flourishing at the margins of Western art. With this book, Alexander Alberro engages decolonial…
theory to explore the dynamic exchanges that occur where the ideals and values of different artistic frameworks meet. Resisting notions of a singular art world and global contemporary art, Alberro explores what lies outside of Western art’s hegemonic presence, recognizing the rich multitude of art formations at its periphery, each with its own artistic narratives and conventions. Alberro brings into focus the complex negotiations that are cultivating innovation and transformation at the margins of Western art, showing how this seemingly monolithic framework is both crucial to and insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of contemporary art. His examples include artists and collectives from around the world, including Iosu Aramburu, Subhankar Banerjee, Yto Barrada, Mabe Bethônico, El Colectivo, Maria Galindo and Mujeres Creando, Bouchra Khalili, Multiplicity, Lucy Orta, Raqs Media Collective, Tracey Rose, Doris Salcedo, Yinka Shonibare, World of Matter, and Yin Xiuzhen. As notions of transculturation and decoloniality continue to drive conversations about contemporary art, Interstices offers a critical explanation of what is at stake, showing how the tensions at the edges of the Western art framework are pushing it toward its discursive limits. This volume presents modern trends in the area of symmetries and their applications based on contributions to the workshop "Lie…
Theory and Its Applications in Physics" held in Sofia (Bulgaria) in June 2023. Traditionally, Lie theory is a tool to build mathematical models for physical systems. Recently, the trend is towards geometrization of the mathematical description of physical systems and objects. A geometric approach to a system yields in general some notion of symmetry, which is very helpful in understanding its structure. Geometrization and symmetries are meant in their widest sense, i.e., representation theory, algebraic geometry, number theory, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and groups, superalgebras and supergroups, groups and quantum groups, noncommutative geometry, symmetries of linear and nonlinear partial differential operators, special functions, and others. Furthermore, the necessary tools from functional analysis are included. This is a large interdisciplinary and interrelated field. The topics covered in this volume from the workshop represent the most modern trends in the field: Representation Theory, Symmetries in String Theories, Symmetries in Gravity Theories, Supergravity, Conformal Field Theory, Integrable Systems, Polylogarithms, and Supersymmetry. They also include Supersymmetric Calogero-type models, Quantum Groups, Deformations, Quantum Computing and Deep Learning, Entanglement, Applications to Quantum Theory, and Exceptional Quantum Algebra for the standard model of particle physics This book is suitable for a broad audience of mathematicians, mathematical physicists, and theoretical physicists, including researchers and graduate students interested in Lie Theory.Par Elisabeth Vanderheiden, Claude-Hélène Mayer. 2025

seen as the greatest philosopher of his age. Ever since, his work has shaped debates about issues as varied as religion, aesthetics and metaphysics. His most lasting contribution was his vision of history and politics. In Hegel&’s World Revolutions, Richard Bourke returns to Hegel&’s original arguments, clarifying their true import and illuminating their relevance to contemporary society. Bourke shows that central to Hegel&’s thought was his anatomy of the modern world. On the one hand he claimed that modernity was a deliverance from subjection, but on the other he saw it as having unleashed the spirit of critical reflection. Bourke explores this predicament in terms of a series of world revolutions that Hegel believed had ushered in the rise of civil society and the emergence of the constitutional state.Bourke interprets Hegel&’s thought, with particular reference to his philosophy of history, placing it in the context of his own time. He then recounts the reception of Hegel&’s political ideas, largely over the course of the twentieth century. Countering the postwar revolt against Hegel, Bourke argues that his disparagement by major philosophers has impoverished our approach to history and politics alike. Challenging the condescension of leading thinkers—from Heidegger and Popper to Lévi-Strauss and Foucault—the book revises prevailing views of the relationship between historical ideas and present circumstances.Par Philipp Plugmann, Patrick Glauner, Guido Lerzynski, Julia Plugmann, Pantea Pape. 2025
